MULTI-AWARD WINNING SONGWRITER JOINS EU CAMPAIGN to help save baby kangaroos
This beautiful limited and exclusive edition has been created to help raise funds for the EU campaign and can be yours by making a minimum donation of $20AU. Just go to the AWPC website (here) and make your donation. You will then be sent your copy from the first 200 that are on release. A further 800 only will be produced later in the year.
A limited and exclusive edition CD has been created to help raise funds for the campaign to have kangaroo products banned across the EU. 440,000 baby kangaroos are brutally killed every year after the mothers are shot for profit, using her meat and skin in what has been described as the biggest land wildlife massacre on the planet.
Maria Daines, the multi-award winning international vocalist and songwriter, who has been described as a mix between Janis Joplin and Melissa Etheridge with a dash of Gretchen Wilson, is the latest person to join the EU campaign to have kangaroo products banned from Europe. In support of the plight of kangaroos in Australia, Maria has co-written a new song highlighting the horrendous way these sentient animals are treated in their native country.
Maria recently said:- “Ending the trade in kangaroo products would end an immense amount of suffering for these amazing and beautiful creatures. When I found out what was happening to the kangaroo I shed a tear and knew I must voice my distress and concern by writing a song. My guitarist and producer Paul Killington is equally appalled by the slaughter of the kangaroo and together we hope we can raise the profile of the campaign by sharing a musical message that shows we care and we want this killing stopped.”
No stranger to the cruel way in which the human race treats animals, Maria has supported US artist Pink at Cardiff International Arena for the Party For Animals World Wide in August 2007, and helped raise £90,000 for animal welfare charities.
AWPC - EU Campaign Director Philip Woolley commented: "This CD brings home the message that killing kangaroos is wrong. More so killing baby kangaroos is totally unacceptable and must stop. We have tried reasoning with the industry in Australia but they are intent of continuing killing these babies andso it is to the outside world and particularly the EU to put an end to this slaughter. This CD is in limited supply only 1000 worldwide and will become a "must have" item. We are over the moon with Maria's support."
Dr Teresa Buss-Carden of the World League for the Protection of Animals said: "We are thrilled that Maria Daines has lent her powerful voice in support of the 440,000 EU campaign. Her song, “Killing your own”, reflects the unspeakable tragedy which occurs every night in Australia. We are killing our own icon, we are killing our spirit of Australia. We believe that Maria's courageous stand for the millions of baby kangaroos decapitated, bashed or left to die from starvation or predation will encourage many other people from all over the world to join this campaign. She sends a powerful message: It is time to stop the massacre of baby kangaroos!”
Maria added: “We hope many more people will also sign the petition and be a voice for the defenceless who are depending on us to help them survive. We must ask ourselves: will the amazing kangaroo, the icon and emblem of Australia, become another victim of mankind's wish to kill everything that lives wild and free?”
Maria Daines’s powerful song paying tribute to kangaroos can be obtained from:-

The Sky's the limit!
Sky news have just reported on our EU campaign and confirms what we have been saying about the trade being cruel (they report about "bashing" a baby kangaroo to death on the side of the shooters truck but don't actually show it) and how by cutting the kangaroos head off - all legal - they can get away with not killing the animal with a "clean" shot as is required by law.
Let us know what you think. WARNING! The film is upsetting!

Victory claimed as Nike plan to drop ‘cruel’ kangaroo leather football boots
TWO leading animal campaigning groups – AWPC (Australian Wildlife Protection Council) – and Viva! (Vegetarians International Voice for Animals) are contacting the sports retail giant Nike to congratulate them on taking an ethical decision that could save the lives of thousands of kangaroos.
A Nike spokesman confirmed yesterday that they would stop using the skins of kangaroos in their football boots: “We are moving towards eradicating the use of kangaroo leather altogether”. The move by Nike came after the campaigning groups’ exposé showing that internationally renowned players at the World Cup were playing in boots made from kangaroo skins or using their names to promote them. These include Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, John Terry, Joe Cole and Michael Carrick.
Millions of adult kangaroos are shot in the Outback in Australia each year for their meat and skin. Also it is estimated that as many as 440,000 orphaned baby kangaroos (joeys) are decapitated or beaten to death every year, then discarded as ‘waste’.
Nike own British sports company Umbro – which also uses kangaroo leather – and they will also be encouraged to extend the policy to them. The AWPC and Viva! will also contact Adidas and Puma, both of which widely use kangaroo leather.
The news from Nike has boosted the campaign to ban the sale of kangaroo parts across the EU, which was already making headway. Last week both Philip Woolley, EU Campaign Director for the Australian Wildlife Protection Council and Justin Kerswell, Campaigns Manager for Viva! were invited to go to the European Parliament in Brussels to discuss their concerns. In fact, 62 per cent of support for a ban is coming from within the EU.
Woolley said: “Nike’s ethical decision is to be welcomed. It is heartening that ahead of a possible EU ban on all kangaroo products, sports manufacturers are waking up to the cruelty behind this horrific industry and are unilaterally distancing themselves from it. We know that once people hear about the bloodshed and misery behind the trade in kangaroo skins they want no part of it, and we predict that the sales of football boots made from it will soon plummet.”
Kerswell said: “It is fantastic news that Nike are planning to kick cruelty out of football – and not a moment too soon. The use of kangaroo skin for football boots is a scandal that has gone on too long. It also leaves no excuse for other companies to continue participating in the largest massacre of wild land animals on the planet today. Many people don’t even know they are buying boots made from kangaroo skin, as it is often hidden under pseudonyms such as k-leather. Most would be horrified that their World Cup and League hopes and dreams – not to mention even their five aside kickabouts – are being propelled by this slaughter. We are delighted that Nike are getting out now before an EU ban, as it perhaps shows they know they cannot defend the indefensible: the killing of baby animals for a sports boot.”

Tuesday 23 March 2010 JUDGE CONFIRMS KILLING IS AN UNNECESSARY PRACTICE! Martin Shaw makes a statement in favour of kangaroo ban.
Martin Shaw (Judge John Deed) is the latest to join in the call for a full ban of kangaroo products in Europe and supports the 440,000 Joeys Campaign set up through the Australian Wildlife Protection Council’s UK campaign office.
Shaw said:- “ I became a vegetarian because if I could live and be healthy without killing, why should I kill for my taste buds? Surely this applies even more to the cruel and unnecessary practice of orphaning joeys.”
He later remarked:- “Cruelty to animals leads inevitably to cruelty to each other. I fully support this campaign and ask the EU to adopt a ban on kangaroo products as quickly as possible to prevent further deaths of these young sentient animals."
He joins his co-star, Jenny Seagrove, and other well known television personalities, who are supporting the campaign. More than 7,000 citizens have signed a petition with a further 3,800 visiting the campaign website.
Philip Woolley, UK Campaign Director commented on the concerns of citizens around the world who had no idea that the killing of joeys was accepted by the industry, after killing the female. He said:-“The practice of killing joeys or leaving them just to starve to death has been going on for years and it has to stop! The general public are getting very concerned about the situation and are prepared to back this campaign."
The campaign, being supported by influential MEP's in the EU, received it's first attack this weekend, in the form of a tirade by the former elderly Federal Minister for the Environment, Mr. Barry Cohen. He reportedly accused Mr. Woolley of "egging on" MEP's to get them on board the campaign. Mr. Woolley said:-" I am sorry that this elderly ex minister has been dragged into this matter. It is even more unfortunate that he felt he had to personally attack me, my MEP and everyone on the planet, including Australians, who care about this cruel practise of killing joeys in such a brutal manner."
This follows an earlier incident where Mr. Woolley's name appeared without his permission, on a petition site written and sponsored by Professor Michael Archer of the UNSW! After complaints to the Vice- Chancellor, Mr. Woolley's name was removed. "How my name appeared on this petition I have no idea, someone else clearly added it, but after the complaint was made to the University on February 10, I am very pleased to say that my name was removed." said Woolley

_________________________________________________________________________________________________ Thursday 4 March 2010 Scientist admits joey problem New South Wales Department of Industry and Investment Scientist Steve McLeod admitted today (ABC News March 3, 2010 at 11:38 AEDT) that the issue of killing a female kangaroo could have an effect on the young at foot joeys.
He alegedly said: " Because they (Kangaroo shooters) harvest at night, the young at foot might not be close to a mother that's shot so they sometimes might not be seen. We don't know the extent of the problem and we don't know what actually happens to those young."
In this unprecedented admission, it seems that the Campaign regarding the issue of the joeys, to have all kangaroo products banned from the European Union, clearly is being taken seriously at long last.

EU powerbroker has roo meat in her sights PAOLA TOTARO AND RACHEL OLDING February 6, 2010 - Sydney Morning Herald
A HIGH-PROFILE campaign to ban kangaroo meat and products throughout the European Union is being backed by the prominent British politician who single-handedly brokered and won the controversial EU ban on all seal products.
Arlene McCarthy, a veteran Labour member of the European Parliament, told the Herald this week that she was resolutely targeting the $270 million kangaroo meat industry.
Speaking from Brussels, Ms McCarthy said that the new law banning the sale of seal products in Europe had come into force this year and followed the ban on cat and dog fur in 2008.
"These campaigns take time but the European Parliament is now looking at the issue of kangaroo products. The clear message is that the European Parliament acts when citizens raise their voice,'' she said.
"Thousands of citizens are now calling for action against the cruel trade in kangaroo fur and meat and I am confident that the Parliament will act. This is a cruel trade … every year, 440,000 joeys are pulled from their pouch when their mothers are left to die.''
The push, which comes just six months after Russia placed a ban on kangaroo meat after concerns of contamination with E.coli bacteria, has also received an unexpected fillip from the former Polish prime minister Professor Jerzy Buzek, who is the president of the European Parliament.
He said the campaign was ''important and valuable'' and wished it every success in encouraging ''as many EU citizens as possible to support'' the project''.
Philip Woolley, the British-based director for the European ''440,000 Joeys'' campaign, said more and more high-profile actors, writers, politicians and artists were joining the drive to ban what he described as Australia's ''dark and dirty secret''.
Recent recruits include Dame Judi Dench, the Aboriginal elder and storyteller Francis Firebrace, British marathon runner Fiona Oakes and the British actress Liza Goddard, who was one of the early young stars of Skippy the Bush Kangaroo.
''This is one of the most important campaigns that has been mounted against the killing of kangaroos in Australia,'' said Mr Woolley. ''An industry that says it works humanely yet does not completely check on the killings cannot claim that it operates in this way. Every kill must be a head shot and when animals are skinned in the bush, no one checks. Killed animals are delivered to processing plants headless, so how can these kills be confirmed as correct?
''When adult animals are killed, leaving defenceless young to fend for themselves, they are brutally killed with a boot to the head or a lead pipe brought down on them; how can this be humane?
''It is about time that the world and particularly the EU knew about this dark and dirty secret which the Australian Government doesn't want anyone to see, let alone talk about. The lives of these young animals have to be saved and the only way is to stop trade in kangaroo products in the EU. This campaign aims to do just that.''
Dame Judi Dench said: ''As a lover of animals and their welfare I am pleased to add my name to the many others across the world who are supporting this very worthwhile campaign. Cruelty to any animal is barbarism and killing a joey after killing the mother is totally unacceptable.''
Supporters of harvesting, such as the UNSW ecologist Professor Michael Archer, say kangaroos are culled humanely to keep over-population in check.
The industry argues it has strict regulations governing the method of killing kangaroos and less than 20 per cent of animals culled are females and the RSPCA supports the industry's code of conduct.
Last month, the federal member for Parkes, Mark Coulton, said a ban in the EU had the potential to ''decimate'' the industry. He accused opponents of conveniently ignoring problems caused to Australia's fragile ecosystem by kangaroos.
''It is very misguided, and with the nation's kangaroo export industry worth hundreds of millions of dollars a year, it is also potentially very damaging,'' he told the Daily Liberal newspaper.
Ray Border, the director of Macro Meats, which is the largest processor of kangaroo meat for domestic and international markets, said 10 per cent of his company's exports went to the EU, generating about $4 million.
''It would be a dent but it would not destroy us,'' he said.
''We look at Europe as being one of the biggest consumers of game meat in the world.''
The executive officer of the Kangaroo Industry Association of Australia, John Kelly, was unfazed by Ms McCarthy's reputation as the first chairwoman of the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee and her position as the vice-chairwoman of the EU's powerful Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee.
''We would expect that the EU Parliament would respond and make decisions on science rather than any sort of emotion. We've been monitoring [the campaign] for six months along with the Australian Government and we're not aware of there being any serious attention to it in the EU.''

Monday 25 January 2010 EU President supports ban on kangaroo product.
In a truly amazing turn of events, Professor Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament and one of the highest officials in Europe, has added his name to a growing campaign to have kangaroo products banned from Europe.
In a letter to the 440,000 campaign director, Philip Woolley, Mr Buzek, who introduces himself as a scientist by profession, said:" I believe that such actions as yours are important and valuable. Therefore I would like to express my support for the campaign. I wish you success in running the campaign and encouraging as many EU citizens as possible to support this project."
"This kind of support is just what we are looking for from caring and compassionate people," said Philip Woolley, EU Campaign Director.
Woolley further went on to say:" Since we received the support of the EU President we have been inundated with support from across Europe and Australia. It seems that the world is saying enough is enough. We now have over 6000 signatures from very concerned citizens who are supporting a ban."
The campaign has now reached the Australian Federal Government who are watching the campaign's developments with great interest.

CAMPAIGN GETS ITS FIRST DAME!
Dame Judi Dench, star of the new Robert Marshall film NINE to be released on 26 December, has become the latest celebrity to add her voice to the campaign to have kangaroo products banned from all EU member states.
Dame Judi, one of Britain’s best loved and respected actors and a great animal welfare supporter said:-
“As a lover of animals and their welfare I am pleased to add my name to the many others across the world who are supporting this very worthwhile campaign.”
She joins a growing list of well known people who are appalled at what is happening to these sentient beings in Australia, all for the sake of a few dollars and the manufacture of sports footwear.
Philip Woolley, the campaign Director in the EU said:- “ It is just amazing to get Dame Judi to support the campaign. We have wonderful people now supporting us and we look forward to starting off the New Year off on a very high note. Other celebrities have signed up and their names will be released in the New Year. This campaign needs as much support as we can gather and already over 5000 citizens have signed up.”
Dame Judi, well known for such roles as M in the James Bond films, Miss Matty in the successful BBC series Cranford with a special appearing over Christmas and now the film Nine went on to say:- “Cruelty to any animal is barbarism and killing a joey after killing the mother is totally unacceptable.”

UNIQUE ART CREATED TO SUPPORT JOEYS CAMPAIGN IN EU Renowned aboriginal celebrity donates piece of art.
The Wirrigan Man, Francis Firebrace of the Yorta Yorta People has created a beautiful piece of artwork, especially for the 440000 Joeys Campaign.
He said recently:-“ I am very proud to support the Joeys Campaign and it is my pleasure to help in this way. My art is based on handed down techniques which are part of my culture from way back. Not only do I care about the land, but also the native creatures who live on it. They are part of our aboriginal cultural history, and to torture them with guns and to bash their young, as the industry does, is just not acceptable.”
The new piece of art, which is called simply Mother and Joey, signifies the dark days of Australia’s history and its treatment of this iconic animal. It recalls a time when life was good. Then Europeans arrived and the Yorta Yorta tribe population was reduced by almost 85 per cent.
Francis continued:- “We are now able to stand up for our rights and we have recognition for the way we were treated. Now it’s time for us to recognise that the kangaroo is owed its heritage; give it back its dignity and allow it to live in peace in its own homeland. The symbolic colours of reds, whites, gold and blue bring hope for the future. I have created this work and wish the eventual owner so see the joy that these animals bring to the land and the lives of humans who care about this unique Australian animal.”
Francis's popularity could well be due to the fact that the stories he tells contain important messages about caring for each other and the Earth, and about racism and greed. He aims to bridge the gaps separating people by generating a greater understanding of his cultural heritage and the lessons it contains. He has hope that with this campaign, there is at last hope for the kangaroo.
Francis currently lives in the south of England but hopes one day he can return to his beloved homeland, Australia.

WITHIN A HEARTBEAT CAROL SAID YES! Actress and interior designer Carol Royle only took a heartbeat to decide that she wanted to add her support to the 440,000 Joeys Campaign
A passionate animal lover and supporter, actress Carol Royle couldn’t believe what she had just read from a new website calling for the ban on kangaroo products in the EU.
“When I read the details on the website about kangaroos I was shocked. I had no idea that this was going on, and in one of the most beautiful places on the planet. The bashing to death of baby joeys after killing the mother, or leaving the young who are able to run away to starve or die of predation, is not my idea of a humane solution to the kangaroo industry’s problem of what to do with these young kangaroos, which they regard as a mere by-product of their atrocious activities.”
“Many, many years ago, all over the world (and, alas, still, in some parts) we turned a blind eye to humans who had special needs or were challenged in some physical way. Now we know better, and seek to help and care for these people.
We have also, in most parts of the world, come round to trying to treat animals with greater compassion and sensitivity, trying to make the process of slaughter for meat less painful and more humane, (unfortunately not succeeding greatly, as yet). The reason for these changes is that we are the greatest animal on earth, capable of more than any other, not only in terms of our power, but our ability to create, analyse and have empathy and compassion.
The other animals we share this planet with may not have all of the above traits, but they have their own, and, indeed, some of their powers are greater than ours. Their sensitivities are certainly heightened, which is why we use them to help us in so many ways, when we aren't eating them.
It follows that we should treat all creatures with compassion and care, and not treat them cruelly or exploit them. Once we have recognised compassion for all other species, it is my firm belief that we will recognise it more deeply for humanity also, and will have made a further step towards the eradication of all violence against one another.”
This campaign and website, created to accompany a Europe-wide campaign led by the Australian Wildlife Protection Council's UK office, has been set up to inform and encourage citizens to sign a petition and voice their concerns about this industry and call for a full ban on kangaroo products.
Philip Woolley, the AWPC Campaign Co-ordinator said: “It is very important that the public know the truth about the killing of adult kangaroos and more importantly about the resulting cruel deaths of their offspring. Killing defenceless and frightened young animals just because they happen to be in the way is totally unacceptable. Young animals are wrenched from the safety of their mother's pouch and, as are seals, bashed to death: there is no difference. I know this will be an unpopular campaign for the shooters, but they have alternatives; kangaroos do not.”
“It needs as many people as possible to sign the petition and visit the website,” said Carol.
“This killing of native kangaroos has been going on since the first European settlers arrived in Australia over 200 years ago and it has to stop. With approximately five million joeys dying in just the last 11 years alone, the ban must come into place quickly and needs lots of support. The death of one animal from being bashed over the head is bad enough, but about 440,000 die every year like this and we must speak out. Sign the petition and stop this massacre.”

ANIMAL WELFARE HITS ROCK BOTTOM! NO HONESTLY! Lynsey de Paul calls for support of campaign
Joining a growing list of famous names, Lynsey de Paul became the latest supporter to add her name to the campaign to have kangaroo products banned from the EU.
De Paul said: “I was in Australia earlier in the year to write an article for The Daily Mail on its diverse and unique wildlife, which has always fascinated and held me in awe. I was privileged to be able to stroke and feed kangaroos at a wildlife sanctuary. They are delightful and extraordinary creatures with their beautiful large eyes, surprisingly silky fur and gentle nature - while in captivity”.
Miss de Paul, famous for such hits as Rock Bottom and Sugar me and a lover of Australia, could not believe that such a beautiful and fabulous country could kill its most iconic of symbols, the kangaroo, using such a devastating method of despatching millions of joeys by bashing them to death.
She said: “I could not bear the fact that these poor animals in the wild were suffering such a dreadful death. It was barbaric and a shame on Australia! I was wondering what I could do and then I heard about this campaign and realised that there was something I could do to help. You can count me in on this campaign to have all kangaroo products banned from the EU. We all need to work together and put an end to this cruel industry and I am sure that with the famous names already adding their strong support, others will follow. It just takes a little time but, slowly and surely, the world is waking up to one of the biggest wildlife massacres on the planet. Please join us and support this important campaign.”

MARATHON RUNNER EXPOSES SECRET OF OLYMPIC PROPORTIONS! Fiona Oakes exposes industry dirty secret but offers a message of hope
“When I found out about Australia's dirty secret I couldn’t believe it. The kangaroo industry, which thinks nothing of killing millions of native wild animals just for profit and sports footwear, has done its best to keep this away from the public. Well, no more!”
Fiona Oakes, famous for her Olympic cycling skills and more recently marathon running decided to act on information coming from Australia about the plight of these innocent joeys.
She said:- “Some 440,000 joeys lose their lives every year. Like baby seals, they are bashed over the head with a blunt instrument because they are in the way of a small group of people making money. These young animals are killed or die through starvation once their mothers are slaughtered, and the industry couldn’t care less. The trouble is that the industry doesn’t want the public to know about this. These poor young defenceless animals, who in most cases can’t even run away, are brutally slaughtered. They are treated as worthless by-products and are paid no respect from the killers who have just shot the mother.”
Not only is Fiona a well accomplished marathon runner but she believes that being a vegan has helped her to achieve the success she has. Whilst she spends time training and running she also manages her own animal sanctuary (Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary) and puts the amount of energy she has down to her life choices not to eat meat.
“The kangaroo industry has blood on its hands every time a kangaroo is shot. The public who buy kangaroo products have blood on their hands every time they go out to buy either kangaroo meat or sports footwear made from kangaroo skin.” said Oakes.
“This campaign is the most important event to highlight this disgraceful industry, which appears to be fully supported by the Australian Government. I urge everyone else to support this vital campaign. Visit the website at:-www.440000joeys.eu.”
Oakes further commented:-“To turn away and not add your name, support or a donation is like turning away when a mother has her child abducted from her. The only difference is that the human mother can shout out. The young kangaroos who can run, call out in the night for their dead mothers, only to face silence and their own deaths, from starvation and loss. Please support this campaign before more animals die. Over five million joeys have died in the last 11 years. Please don’t allow any more to die. Wash the blood from your hands by not buying kangaroo products. Support the campaign and help to put a stop to this barbaric and cruel industry.”

A JOKE TO MANY! Dave Spikey adds his voice to the kangaroo campaign
When it comes to comedy, Dave Spikey (Phoenix Nights) loves to tell a great joke but he isn’t laughing about recent news he received about the plight of joeys in Australia. When he heard about the 440,000 joeys who are reported to die each year by being bashed to death like seals or run off and die of starvation, he felt he had to do something to help a new campaign calling for a ban of kangaroo products in the EU.
Dave said:-“I am proud to be adding my name to this campaign as it highlights one of the biggest wildlife massacres on the planet, that of the killing of millions of kangaroos in Australia. The news that 440,000 joeys die every year as a by-product of this industry is extremely upsetting and of great concern.”
At first he thought it was a joke as he had never heard about what goes on but later commented:-“For the sake of supplying pet food producers and sports footwear manufacturers, these animals are hunted down in the most inhospitable of environments and treated like vermin. I urge everyone to visit the campaign website at:- www.440000joeys.eu and sign the petition calling on the EU to bring in the ban on all kangaroo products.”
He was so appalled by the news which is slowly coming to light about the effects of killing kangaroos in Australia and the resulting deaths of these young animals that he went on to say:-“It is vital that the public and other well-known celebrities like myself get behind this important campaign. If you do nothing else before Christmas, make sure you add your name to this worthwhile and important campaign.”

JENNY SEAGROVE COMES OUT IN DEFENCE OF OTHERS
One of the stars of the hit show, "Judge John Deed, " Jenny Seagrove, became the second actress, to add her name to that of Liza Goddard, in support the campaign to have kangaroo products banned from the whole of the EU.
Jenny said:-"I find the thought of these defenceless baby kangaroos being brutally killed or allowed to starve to death, quite unacceptable. It is vital that the EU bring in a total and absolute ban on all Kangaroo product without delay to save these animals. I am giving my support to this initiative and I call for all EU countries and Ministers to follow suit by agreeing to vote in favour of this ban."
A great supporter of animal welfare, Jenny urged everyone who cares about animal welfare to support the ban, she said:- "By adding my support I hope others will follow in a show of strength across Europe to stop all imports of Kangaroo and save the lives of these 440,000 joeys who die each year as a "by-product of this dreadful industry. I give my support without reservation and urge others to do the same." The kangaroo killing season will start in a few short months in Australia with the prospect of thousands more joeys meeting their untimely deaths.

SKIPPY STAR BACKS KANGAROO BAN Skippy star is hopping mad. Liza Goddard adds her voice to new campaign!
It has been reported today that Liza Goddard, who played the character of Clancy Merrick in the Australian hit show ‘Skippy’, has joined in with the support for the 440,000 Joeys campaign.
She said:-"When I found out about this campaign and with my love for Australia, I knew I had to add my voice to the others in the support of the total ban of kangaroo products in the EU. I spent many of my early years in acting in the hit show 'Skippy' and loved being amongst these beautiful sentient beings.”
Liza Goddard, an animal lover who now lives in the south of England went on to say: “Over the years, kangaroos have been demonised and that is so far from the truth. The iconography of the kangaroo which symbolises Australia the world over should be protected. Not shot into extinction. Until the mass killing of kangaroos and the deaths of these poor joeys is stopped, I would urge everyone in Europe to support this ban. I do so with pride and pleasure."
The EU Campaign is being co-ordinated by Philip Woolley, the Australian Wildlife Protection Council's, UK representative. Philip said:
“It is very rewarding to have such wonderful well-known people now taking a big interest in the campaign. More enquiries are coming in every day from celebrities and the public wanting to know about the plight of these defenceless joeys, and how they too can help support the ban. We have such great support for the campaign from MEPs, who we are working with to bring this ban in.”
Philip hopes to be announcing the support of more famous names very soon.

CALL FOR EU TO BAN ALL KANGAROO PRODUCTS Joey’s no longer going on walkabout!
Today, Monday 26 October, Philip Woolley, UK Representative for the Australian Wildlife Protection Council (AWPC) announced the launch of one of the biggest campaigns to have kangaroo products banned in the EU when he handed over a petition from thousands of concerned citizens to MEP, Arlene McCarthy (Vice Chairwoman, EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee) at her Manchester office.
The ban calls for all kangaroo products to be banned in the Member States to prevent the deaths of some 440,000 joeys (baby kangaroos) who die from being bashed to death once they are ripped from their dying mother’s pouch. The young-at-foot (no longer in pouch) will run off and die from starvation and neglect.
The industry generates some AU$250 million per annum and has never been a favourite industry with animal welfare groups. Russia has recently banned all imports of kangaroo meat on health grounds as it (Russia) has allegedly found traces of E.coli and salmonella bacteria in imported products. EU citizens are not offered the same protection, which is causing concern.
Arlene McCarthy MEP said: “There is growing public concern about the trade in kangaroo products. Each year as a result of the trade, 440,000 joeys are ripped from their pouch and left to die when their mothers are killed. This is a cruel trade and, as with the successful introduction of cat and dog fur and seal product bans, I am supporting the Australian Wildlife Protection Council’s petition to the European Parliament calling for a ban on the import of kangaroo products.”
The campaign, supported by international animal welfare organisations, VIVA, Humane Society International and Sea Shepherd, calls for all citizens of the EU to sign the petition and write to MEPs asking for their support.

WOW seems like nothing has been happening but far from it. National Kangaroo Awareness Day is now set for 24th at Belmore Park Sydney, everyone's support is needed. The Premier of QLD is heading for Russia to try and talk them round into lifting the ban on kangaroos meat imports. The Russians in the meantime have been asked to visit Australia to work on quality standards.
We need lots more signatures on the petition to make it work in the EU so please tell all your pals on facebook, twitter email etc to vote and all their friends. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!
Wednesday 19th August 2009 Greenpeace confirm that they do not advocate people to eat kangaroo meat!
Sunday 9th August 2009 The Russian ban in now in place which is causing problems for the kangaroo Killing Industry. It should be noted that there are plans for retraining all people who have lost theirs jobs because of the ban so whilst it seems that people will suffer, in real terms this is not the case. Not only does the ban by Russia help to save lives of kangaroos but it gives people in rural areas of Australia new hope for better jobs and prosperity through promoting their land and tourism. GREAT news all round.
Wednesday 15 July 2009 Russia has announced that from August 1st this year, they are to bring in a TOTAL ban on all Kangaroo meat. They take some 70% of all meat produced.
Monday 29 June 2009 Kangaroos have been spotted in London in what appears to be an attempt of the South Australian Tourist Board to encourage Brit's to visit. How ironic that they use this world know Iconic symbol for publicity yet this year alone, they are planning to kill some 377,200 of the animals. |
