SUBJECT:- PLEASE STOP THE DEATHS OF 440,000 BABY KANGAROOS!

Dear (Insert MEP Name here)

Reference:- Petition 1447/2009 - the call for a ban on all kangaroo products in EU.

As a citizen of the European Union, I am concerned to hear that kangaroo products are available throughout the 27 Member States with no regard for the fate of at least 440,000 baby kangaroos, who are violently ripped from their dead or dying mother’s pouch, only to have their heads bashed in with a blunt object.  I also lodge my concern that the young-at-foot face a slow death through dehydration, starvation and predation, once the mother is killed.

In 2009 the adult kangaroos killed were placed at some 1.9 million which according to the kangaroo industry would mean some 20 per cent would have been females who would have young.  This means almost 800,000 young animals in total have died purely as they are considered a  "by-product" of the industry.  It is worth noting that the Seal ban brought in last year to protect seals related to 330,000 animals in total.

This appalling situation whereby the biggest slaughter of wildlife land mammals is allowed to continue is quite unacceptable to me as an EU citizen.

Sports footwear companies are some of the biggest users for kangaroo skin.  These companies (with the exception of NIKE*) are aware of the suffering of baby kangaroos but still continue to support the kangaroo killing industry in Australia.
 * NIKE stated in the press recently that they were to "eradicate" kangaroo skins from their sports footwear as other materials were available.

These companies and those who use kangaroo skin, have therefore an advantage over others in as much as the public are poorly informed of the trade in kangaroo and what the skins are used.  Manufacturers and importers of kangaroo skin and products, do not need to label their products as such and do it purely voluntary, which means that as a member of the public, I may not know what I am buying, which puts me at a disadvantage.

Kangaroo meat products are of equal concern to me from a health and hygiene point of view in as much as there is clear evidence to show that kangaroo meat carries the parasitic disease toxoplasmosis and E.coli, salmonella bacteria, which could be harmful to my health. Russia has a ban in place on kangaroo meat for these very same reasons yet the EU allows this across it's borders without, it would seem, any proper control.

For these and other reasons, I request that you offer the same protection to baby kangaroos as you do seals.

I fully and without condition, support the ban calling for the prohibition of kangaroo products namely but not exclusively:-

1. Any Kangaroo product (Meat, skin, finished other products) from entering the EU from third countries like Indonesia, Australia and others

2. The restriction of trade in all kangaroo products and especially in the case of football boots.

I call on you as my elected MEP to support this ban and help end this barbaric trade and I look forward to hearing of your support on this petition.

Yours sincerely
